We know where we are going because we know where we are coming from.
We are delighted to share this experience with you.
Our history runs deep and resonates through centuries of heritage. It all started in the year 1816, when an important aristocratic family from Ciutadella moved closer to the city of Mahón in order to seek refuge from the rapidly spreading Black Death. Their new home had all the classic architectural features of a traditional country house, with stunning features such as weathered terracotta tiles, arched porches and porthole windows. The house is set in 100 hectares of land, standing high with a beautiful façade that faces south and overlooks glorious countryside and sweeping views of the Mediterranean. The name of the property was Cugó.
Now, guests can indulge themselves at the Cugó Gran Macina in Malta, an island enjoying an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. They can stay in a luxurious setting that is steeped in history with fantastic views over both the capital city of Malta - Valletta and the harbour. We pride ourselves in this destination, one that offers an exceptional location and great heritage in this small but very special archipelago.
Constructed by the Order of Saint John in 1554, the Macina formed part of a bastion which was designed to protect Senglea from invaders. As an iconic landmark in the city, the Cugó Gran Macina is truly a hotel with a difference. Opened after major refurbishment in 2018, its historical fortress walls contrast with modern interior design and bespoke luxury fittings, looking out across the magnificent harbour to Vittoriosa and Cospicua.
